Okay, so the “real” cave is mostly closed to the public. But the neo-cave recreates the spaces of the Altamira Cave so faithfully that the experience is still mind-blowing. And don’t forget to spend some time at the Altamira Museum, to learn about the people who inhabited the cave and their ways of life, culture, and, of course, art. There are more than 400 archaeological objects on display there. Like prehistoric sewing needles!

Juan Infante Street: the Peredo Barreda Palace and the Villa House
We go to the historic centre and start with its “classic” entrance: Juan Infante Street . With the first palace we come across, the baroque Palacio de Peredo Barreda , we realised that the issue of noble coats of arms was, and still is, a serious matter. You know, coats of arms of noble palaces, another thing you have to see in Santillana del Mar. The town is famous for them, so look carefully. If there is a helmet, like here, it is a nobleman. And the sirens or tritons indicate that they are Indianos.
